They Are Forgiven

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”

Isaiah 43: 18, 19
King James Version

One of the most vicious ways that our enemy, satan, attacks us is by constantly reminding us of our past mistakes, sins and failures. It is important for us to remember once in a while where God brought us from and all that He did for us when He washed our sins, mistakes and failures away in the precious blood of Jesus. If we don’t remember where He brought us from and what He delivered us from occasionally, we can become arrogant and start bragging about our accomplishments. We need to understand that we can do nothing without Jesus. Anything good that we do or have accomplished comes from Him and we would do well to remember that.

However, Jesus makes it very clear that we are not to remember the former things. If our sins have been cleansed by the precious atoning and redeeming blood of the Christ of Calvary, we have been forgiven. Jesus will never hold our past against us. O that you and I would follow His example. Many times we tell people that we forgive them but we don’t forgive them from our hearts. We harbor resentment and bitterness in our hearts and when they do something to hurt us, we bring the past up to them. We should not do that and it stinks in the nostrils of Jesus when we bring the past up to them!

Not only does Jesus tell us not to remember the former things; He also tells us that He will make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. I think if we will be honest with ourselves that there are times when all of us wander in the wilderness of loneliness, doubts, confusion, discouragement and turmoil. However, Jesus has given us good news. He said that He has made rivers in the desert for us and all we have to do is jump in and allow His soothing and tender unconditional love to comfort us, encourage us, reassure us and give us hope once again. Our family, loved ones and friends can comfort and encourage us and we need to comfort and encourage each other but only Jesus can see into the hidden corners of our hearts. Only Jesus can put His anointing, soothing salve on the hidden scars in our heart. There is no friend like Jesus! He is a friend beyond compare.

Don’t allow satan to discourage and defeat you. Jesus paid an agonizing price so that you can be free from the past when He hung on that cross of horror for you and for me. The next time that satan tries to discourage you, tell him that your sins are under the precious blood of Jesus. If you are hurting today, I urge you to jump into the refreshing soothing rivers of the unconditional love of Jesus.
